Blackwork Moonlight by Leon Conrad

Chart: This Leon Conrad Designs chart is printed on a double-sided yellow Foolscap cardboard sheet. It is a blackwork and beads chart, but the grid work is for Aida, so many of the stitches do not line up to the grid. You can have up to 8 or 10 lines with one grid square. I would have prefered on such a detailed design, for the chart to be printed larger and on the grid lines.

Stitches: Pattern uses Blackwork, Double Running stitch and Beads.

Materials: Rainbow Gallery Subtlety, YLI Silk Thread and Mill Hill Glass beads. Stitched on Zweigart 32ct “Antique white” or “Cream” evenweave.

Designer’s Notes: From the Elizabethan Elegance series.

Why I was attracted to this design: As part of my love of history and historic fashion comes a love of historic blackwork.  This piece is inspired by Elizabethan blackwork shapes and infill designs.

So why haven’t I stitched it? I bought this back in 2003 or thereabouts. I had no idea back then how to obtain either of the threads used in this design. I have a hazy memory, when discussing Leon Conrad Designs at the time, other stitchers encouraged me away from his designs. I don’t remember why. Can anyone else remember or comment on that?  Regardless, this one was put back into the stash and I stopped looking for any more of his charts.

Where can you buy it? Leon Conrad Designs does not appear to exist any longer.  I recommend trying eBay.co.uk.

Discussion questions: Do you like Elizabethan blackwork designs?  Real historic designs only or “inspired by” designs like this?
