Chat Noir by Art - Stitch

Chart: This Art – Stitch chart is printed on a single Letter/A4 sheet of paper. The symbol key, backstitching instructions and floss count are printed on a second sheet. As the chart only uses three colours and each of these are in large swathes, the chart is very easy to follow.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole cross stitch and backstitch. This design can easily be stitched as a one-over-one or a canvas work piece.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton stitched on 14ct “Desert Sand” Aida.

Designer’s Notes: Chat Noir was inspired by a turn of the century French poster by Theophile Steinlen. It advertises a nightclub called the Chat Noir, or black cat. It features an alley cat with attitude from the streets of Montmartre near the Chat Noir, an area of Paris that was home to Toulouse-Lautrec and many of his contemporaries.

Why I was attracted to this design: I love the original Le Chat Noir poster and this was the first cross stitch interpretation I saw of that. There have been others since, some far more detailed, but I do like the simplicity of this. It has all of the basic elements.

So why haven’t I stitched it? I have three cat designs put out by Art – Stitch (Chat Noir, Noel and Feline Queen) and I decided that I would stitch them all on the same fabric.  It was only at a recent closing down sale that I finally bought a large enough piece of Wichelt 32ct “Sandstone” Linen/Silk blend to stitch all three.

Where can you buy it? Art – Stitch is very much stitch in business with a wide range of themes. Your LNS or ONS can specially order in this chart for you, or you can buy it directly from Art – Stitch for $12.00 (US).

Art – Stitch also sells Chat Noir as a needlepoint canvas kit for $62.50 (US)

Discussion questions: Would you stitch this design as an ordinary 2 over 2 cross stitch, or would you be tempted to stitch it as one over one or as a counted canvaswork piece?  I am interested int he experiences and proclivities of others!

Project Status:
25 May 2012 – Ready to start as soon as I find all three charts and cut the fabric.

Rose Tile by Art - Stitch

Chart: This Art – Stitch chart, symbol key, backstitching instructions and floss count is printed on a single-sided Letter/A4 sheet of paper. The chart itself is comprises only one-third of the sheet. The symbols are small, but the chart is quite simple in design so it appears easy to follow.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole cross stitch and backstitch.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton stitched on 16ct “White” Aida.

Designer’s Notes: Rose Tile was inspired by an English art nouveau tile from the turn of the century. It is one of the countless examples of art nouveau expressed wonderfully in ceramics.

Why I was attracted to this design: I love older styles of artwork, especially Art Deco and Art Nouveau. This tile is also reminiscent of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work from a similar period.

So why haven’t I stitched it? Because it’s boring. I’m sorry but I just don’t think that painted ceramics translates to cross stitch very well.  Either that or my tastes have moved on and this design is just too bland for my taste.  Mum loves it though, so this will be moved into her stash.

Where can you buy it? Art – Stitch is very much stitch in business with a wide range of themes. Your LNS or ONS can specially order in this chart for you, or you can buy it directly from Art – Stitch for $US9.00.

Art – Stitch also sell Rose Tile as a needlepoint canvas for $US37.00
