Arameth by Dragonfly Lane

Chart: The chart is printed over ten Letter/A4 pages with a three-row overlap. Unfortunately, the chart was printed with many of the symbols of a similar shape and size.  The chart is printed quite small.  My copy of the chart was printed after the toner needed changing as there are obvious paler sections across each page.  All of these problems combine to make most of the symbols under the three-row overlap impossible to read.

On the positive side, the backstitching is coloured in two or three different colours to denote the different colours used. unfortunately even after reading the instructions and viewing the picture I can’t tell if there is supposed to be one red and one blue line or one red and two  blues. Are the differences in the blues a deliberate decision for different backstitching instructions or is it just the toner issues again?

Stitches: Pattern uses whole cross stitch, fractional stitches, backstitch and beads.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton, Kreinik blending filament, Kreinik #4 braid, Rainbow Gallery Hi-lights, Rainbow Gallery Petite Treasure Braid and Mill Hill glass beads. Stitched on Sugar Maple Fabrics 28ct “Moon Princess” Lugana.

Designer’s Notes: None.

Why I was attracted to this design: It’s a hippocampus!  How many designs have you seen for a Hippocampus??? This design has it all!  A mythological beastie, a fabulous hand-dyed darker background and loads of bling! Four different types of metallics and although the picture is quite bad, there are bubbles of beads leading upwards from the plants to the top of the design. What’s not to love?

So why haven’t I stitched it? I fell in love with the fabric and then Sugar Maple Fabrics went out of business. I’ve had a daily eBay search in for this fabric since I learned they shut their doors.  It’s never become available. Well not via a seller that would ship to Australia (that’s the parameters of my search).

Where can you buy it? Dragonfly Lane have also gone out of business. You can find their charts in some LNS and ONS the hold older stock or they do come up on eBay. Expect to pay around $10US for this chart.

Discussion questions: It’s time I let go of the “Holy Grail” of the exact Sugar Maple fabric for this chart.  There are so many other fabric dyers available now.  Which fabric by another dyer do you recommend for this piece?
