Oriental Dragon by Vermillion Stitchery

Chart: This Vermillion Stitchery chart is printed over a double-sided A3 sheet.  The second side contains a 10-row overlap. The symbols are printed large and easy to discern with the symbol legend at the bottom of the second side of the sheet. There is a separate page that lists the Colour and symbol chart again, suggested fabrics and basic cross stitch diagrams and instructions on how to stitch with Kreinik blending filament.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole cross stitch only.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton and Kreinik blending filament. Stitched on Zweigart 14ct “Black” Aida. I usually swap out Aida and use an evenweave or linen instead, but as this uses whole cross stitch only, this project could be a perfect way to use the spare Black Aida supplied in the Maia Le Harem Moderne kit listed yesterday!

Designer’s Notes: None.

Why I was attracted to this design: Donna Vermillion Giampa has been one of my favourite designers since her work was first released in kit form by Janlynn – before she even opened her own company :)  This is by far the simplest of er designs in my stash – she does a great line of fantasy and legends.

So why haven’t I stitched it? As with a few of the others mentioned already this year, I have others by this designer that I love more, and I’ve been trying to kit up first, so I haven’t really given this particular design the attention it deserved.  I didn’t realise until today that it was whole stitches only and didn’t include any beads. I can finish kitting this up and more importantly, I can stitch this in my current state. the design is not too complex for me.

Where can you buy it? Vermillion Stitchery is in the process of converting all of their charts from print to pdf.  This one is not currently available in pdf form, so you can email Vermillion Stitchery to request the chart be converted to digital PDF format soon, or you can find a LNS or ONS that stocks older printed charts.  Expect to pay around $10US for this chart.

Discussion questions: It’s obvious that this design was charted in the 1980s.  Would you make any changes to this chart when stitching it, or would you remain faithful to the original, being aware that it is indicative of its time and place?

Project Status:
12 Mar 2012 – Partially kitted – need to check if I have all of the Kreinik Blending Filament colours.
