Do you see what I see by Funk & Weber

Chart: This Funk & Weber chart is print on the inside of a folded A3 cardboard sheet. The symbols are printed nice and large and there is a two-row over lap between the left and right panels. The chart takes up the entire inside area of the booklet, the instructions and commentary are printed on the back.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole cross stitches, fractional stitches, backstitch and straight stitch.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton and DMC Perle #8. Stitched on Zweigart 28ct “White” Jubilee.

Designer’s Notes: You won’t believe your eyes! Eleven optical illusions to tease and please. Can you believe that the words “NEEDLE” and “THREAD” are stitched in the same color? You’ll stitch it, so your brain will know, but good luck convincing your eyes!

Why I was attracted to this design: I love Illusions and this chart has many of the classics! The Impossible cube, White’s Illusion, the Impossible Figure, the Bezold Color illusion, The Impossible Stairs, the Müller-Lyer illusion and Hering’s illusion.

So why haven’t I stitched it? Some of these like the Müller-Lyer illusion (where one line looks longer than the other because of the direction of the arrows ar the end) are fun because you know what the illusion is even while your brain is being fooled.  Some of the others such as the Colour Afterimage (the apple) and the Bezold Color illusion I fear really wont work in a stitched form. The  photo of the Impossible Stairs already really doesn’t work for me as well as it could.  IF anyone can bring illusions to life it would be Funk & Weber with their love of puzzles, but I still fear I will be disappointed.

I should really get into the mindset that I am stitching these as an homage to the illusions rather than as illusions of themselves.

Where can you buy it? As these are older designs, your LNS or ONS may have to specially order these in.  However you can order it directly from Funk & Weber for $10.00 (US).

Discussion questions:  Which is your favourite optical illusion and can you provide a link to a good example? Do you know any other stitching designs of illusions?
