A Dragon's Lair by Enchanting Lair

Chart: This Enchanting Lair chart is printed on an 8-page, A3 folded, stapled booklet. The chart is printed quite large, over four pages with the symbols printed quite clear to see and easy to differentiate. Each chart section is printed inside a panel on each page, so there is no concern regarding staples or creases over the symbols.  The central design incorporates extensive backstitch and the border is composed of a variety of specialty stitches.  There are pages of instructions and diagrams explaining these areas. Overall I am impressed with the attention to detail given in the instructions.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole Cross stitch, Fractional stitches, Backstitch, Diamond Rhodes, Half-diamond eyelets, Windmill crosses, Corner Rhodes and Longstitch.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton, Kreinik blending filament, Kreinik #4 Very Fine braid, Crescent Colours cottons, Needle Necessities cottons and Weeks Dye Works cottons.  Stitched on Picture This Plus 28ct “Pansy” linen.

Designer’s Notes: None.

Why I was attracted to this design: Well lately it seems every second design we’ve pulled is a dragon design. I love my mythological beasties. I also love Enchanting Lair’s use of colour in these designs. I love how she uses the hand dyed fabrics as an element in the design process rather than ignoring the background as so many other designers do. The artwork is a gestalt of the pattern, the textures and the colours. I’ve not seen another designer do this as well as Enchanting Lair.

So why haven’t I stitched it?  Like all designs which have five different brands of threads, plus a separate brand of hand-dyed fabric, I simply haven’t gathered all the items together yet.  This is a prime example of the charts I have in my spreadsheets waiting for sales.  As I acquired each thread or fabric on sale, the design would inch closer to being kitted and ready to start.

Where can you buy it? Although this is an older design it is still in print and can be easily ordered in for you by your LNS or ONS of choice. You can also purchase the chart directly from  Enchanting Lair for $9.00 CAD.

Discussion questions: Above I stated this design was “a gestalt of the pattern, the textures and the colours.” Is that something you look for in a designer?  Or is the pattern paramount to you and the fabric merely the canvas on which to display the design?
