Fractal 10 by Cross Stitch Collectibles

Chart: This Cross Stitch Collectibles chart pack is a ring-bound 30 page chart and three pages of materials, floss legend, instructions and Care and Washing instructions. There are no overlap rows between each of the pages but every page is solidly stitched. As this is a “shades of grey” design, there are only nine colours. Unfortunately the symbols used are the numbers 1 -8 and a dot for white.  A wider range of symbols might have made for easier discernment between the symbols; all of the numerals are of a uniform height and width.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole Cross stitch only.

Materials: DMC stranded cottons. Stitched on 14ct “White” Aida. As this is a solidly stitched piece, you can stitch on any fabric colour of your choosing.  Similarly as the pattern uses whole cross stitch only, it can be stitched one-over-one on any count of fabric or canvas that you choose.

Designer’s Notes: None.

Why I was attracted to this design: I like the symmetry in this and the illusion. Where are the boxes coming out to meet you and where are they sunk in?  Stare at it for a few minutes or look at it from a different angle and see if any of the boxes turn into hollows or vice versa :)

So why haven’t I stitched it?  This was given to me as a birthday present by Sisu along with a large piece of 28ct cream evenweave. All I needed to do was add in the DMC.  This one has suffered from others of its ilk in that I’ve been too afraid to start any of the art-xstitch conversions. It’s time I just picked one and put needle into fabric.

Where can you buy it? This design can be easily ordered direct from Cross Stitch Collectibles for $15.00 (US).

Discussion questions: This project is designed to be stitched on 14ct, yet I see most art-xstitch being stitched one-over-one on 25ct or 28ct.  How would you stitch this design?

Project Status:
8 May 2012: Better buy some DMC and start.
