Chart: The chart is printed in over 16 Letter/A4 pages with no overlap. My version of this is an older chart, so although the symbols are very large, they are quite similar and difficult to differentiate. I printed my pdf version back in 2006.  The file on the new Artecy site is copyright 2008, so it may contain different, easier to read symbols.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole cross stitches only.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton. Stitched on Zweigart 14ct “White” Aida.

Designer’s Notes: This counted cross stitch pattern of Albert Einstein with his quote and other mathematic symbols was designed by Tereena Clarke of Artecy Cross Stitch using antique clipart.

Why I was attracted to this design: I joined the Artecy members website in 2006 and printed out a dozen or so charts over the next month and then didn’t get back to Artecy until this year. One of the charts I printed out was this one. I love samplars with quotes; its like stitching up my own little sig files or “quote of the day”.  There are some little pithy comments that have spoken to me over the years.  I had a Maths teacher in High School that would quote this phrase at us incessantly, but being snotty, smart-arse kids, we never took the time to understand what he meant. It wasn’t until years later, when I had a different teacher at a different school that I finally understood.

So why haven’t I stitched it? I wasn’t sure how well Einstein’s face was going to come out and I was worried about being disappointed. Also I wanted to stitch this on something other than white Aida but I didn’t know what.  Like half the charts that require extra thought, this one ended up back in the stash.

Where can you buy it? If you are an old Artecy member you can log in and print this one for free at the old Artecy site. For everyone else, the new Artecy site sells the pdf for $4.95 (US) or paper chart for $7.95 (US).

Discussion questions: Einstein’s face is mainly stitched in DMC 3865 Winter White, with accents in DMC 168, 169, 413 (Pewters) 3072 (Beaver Grey) and of course 310 (Black). Which fabric colour, other than white, would you stitch this on?
