Ouroborus by Dracolair Creations

Chart: This Dracolair Creations chart is printed on a six light purple, double-sided Letter/A4 cardboard sheets. The design is printed twice on each sheet, once with the cross and fractional stitches only, the other highlighting the backstitch.  This design contains very few fractional stitches and little confetti stitching, but many of the symbols are still difficult to discern on the purple background. A heavier ink or paler background would have been preferred.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole Cross stitch, fractional stitches and backstitch.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton. Stitched on Zweigart 28ct or 32ct “White” linen.

Designer’s Notes: Ouroborus is the ancient symbol of a serpent with its tail in its mouth, often used in Alchemy to represent purification. It symbolises renewal and the constant cycle of creation and rebirth from destruction and death..

Why I was attracted to this design: I love Dragons and all mythological beasties as is evident from a perusal of previous entries in this blog. I love the symbolism of the Ouroborus serpent. Many different cultures have a similar mythological creatures such as Quetzacotyl and The Rainbow Serpent.

So why haven’t I stitched it? I suspect this one has still been languishing in my stash because it is simple DM on white linen and I wanted to jazz it up.  As usual with these projects, the actual process of selecting new threads and fabric, especially adding metallics, beads etc proves too much and I wimp out and put the chart back in the stash and pull out a chart theat is more straight-forward to kit up.

Two days ago I was visited by one of my best friends and her daughter. Before they left, I asked them to pull charts for the rest of the weekend projects for me. The daughter randomly selected St Sylvestre and the Mother randomly pulled out Ouroborus. I typed up St Sylvestre after they left for that day’s Project. In the early hours of the next morning my beloved Tiger passed away quite unexpectedly. I didn’t have the heart to go near this blog yesterday, but today Ouroborus seems the perfect chart.

Where can you buy it? This design is still in print and can be easily ordered by your LNS or ONS of choice. Or you could order direct from Dracolair. You should pay around $12.00 (US).

Discussion questions: I’m very tempted to start this one now. It feels like it might be very therapeutic and it a very simple design compared to most Dracolair Creations charts.  I’m prepared to stitch it with just the DMC threads, however I’m not enamoured of the white linen.  Any suggestions for fabric choices to stitch this luscious purple winged serpent on?
