Celtic Cross by M Designs

Copyright Mary McLenon, M Designs, 2007.

Chart: This M Designs chart is printed on a single A4/Letter sheet. It is a monochrome design, but the symbol, a filled in circle, is large and dark and easy to see. The design is printed large enough to be easily followed on the sheet.

The beauty of this design is created by manipulation of the stitch direction.  It is a monochrome design using one multi-coloured thread.  Rather than stitching line by line giving a striped, abstract shape to this piece, the stitcher, uses the floss to follow the flow of the Celtic knot work around each of the motifs. The flow of colour and negative space are what give shape to this design. It is quite clever and ensures each stitcher’s work will be unique.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole cross stitch only so this piece is suitable for one over one or canvas work.

Materials: Thread Gatherer Silk ‘n Colours. Stitched on Lakeside Linens 40ct “Vintage Exemplar” linen.

Designer’s Notes: A companion piece to my Alphabet Series, this stylised cross can be stitched and framed alone or incorporated with various letters. Personalise the design by choosing the linen counts and thread colours that suit your project.

Why I was attracted to this design: I fell in love with this design when it first came out in 2007 but I have only acquired it very very recently. I must confess I am very surprised at how small the design is at 91 x 95 stitches. It seemed so much larger and more complicated.  Perhaps I was taken in by the triple framing :)

So why haven’t I stitched it? As this is very new into the stash I simply haven’t had the wherewithal to acquire the fabric and floss.  I will be stitching this one on 32ct linen instead of 40ct though, my eyes can’t cope with 40ct but otherwise I will be stitching this exactly as charted.

Where can you buy it? This chart is still in print and can be bought from your LNS or ONS for $6.00 (US). Alternatively you can buy this design directly from the M Designs Etsy shop for the same price.

Discussion questions:  The recommended colourway for this is Thread Gatherer Silk n Colours Acorn Woods stitched on Lakeside Linens 40ct “Vintage Exemplar” linen.  What colourway would *you* stitch this design?
