Celtic Jeweled Cross by Dracolair Creations

Chart: This Dracolair Creations chart is printed on a double-sided, folded Letter/A4 cardboard sheet. The design is printed twice on the inside of the chart, once with the cross and fractional stitches only, the other showing the backstitch.  The design is composed mainly of fractional stitches, so the symbols are quite small.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole Cross stitch, fractional stitches and backstitch.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton. Stitched on 32ct “Cream” linen.

Designer’s Notes: None.

Why I was attracted to this design: A Christian Cross may appear a strange inclusion in my stash given my very outspoken views on organised religion. However I can appreciate art independent of the organisation. I love the gold and jewelwork designs of the medieval period, both in secular and various religious forms.

So why haven’t I stitched it?  I’ve always though about jazzing up this design, but I wasnt sure how to do so without ruining it.  It is based on gold and jewelwork, so I want to include some metal threads and maybe some petite jewel-type beads, but the colours and shading that Sarah has used is so subtle and perfect, that I feel I would ruin it if I muck with it.

Where can you buy it? This design is still in print and can be easily ordered by your LNS or ONS of choice. Or you could order direct from Dracolair. You should pay around $US5.00.

Discussion questions: Thinking further on ideas for jazzing up this design to a bit more than just DMC on Cream, what about using metallic threads to do the backstitch outlining and including pearl-like seed beads in the centres of the blue areas? Any ideas on the fabric?
