Mushroom Magic by Fire Wing Designs

Chart: This Fire Wing Designs chart is printed over six Letter/A4 pages with a three-row overlap on each page. The symbols are quite large and easy to see and easy to differentiate. I love the look of this chart.   There are also instructions given to make all of the mushrooms a single colour if you would prefer (while still retaining that beautiful shading).  There is also a page of alternate patterns for solid dragon wings (instead of the diaphanous wings seen above). So Eva has provided a lot of assistance for you to very easily personalise this design to suit your preference or decor.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole Cross stitch, fractional stitches and backstitch.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton and Kreinik blending filaments. Stitched on Picture This Plus 28ct “Carnival” linen.

Designer’s Notes: The mushrooms in this pattern are based on those in the genus Armillariella, and are produced by a fungus parasite of trees. Several species of Armillariella produce reproductive mushrooms in the form depicted here, though they are generally pale orange and cream in colour. These are reported to be very edible mushrooms, though you should never pick and eat anything you are not absolutely certain is harmless.

The wings of the “dragonfly” are based on the wings of a species of dragonfly called a common whitetail (Libellula lydia). Males of these dragonflies have dark brown heads and legs and white abdomens. Their wings are patterned in clear and dark brown patches, just as those on the dragon in this pattern. Females have a different wing pattern and have darker coloured abdomens.

Why I was attracted to this design: I adore Fire Wing Designs. I don’t know why it has taken until now for one to appear in this blog! This one was a gift earlier this year from Tina. I have loved this design ever since I first saw it! I love insect designs, so this dragon with dragonfly wings just caught my imagination!  The riot of colours in the mushrooms appeals to my sense of whimsy.

So why haven’t I stitched it?  I was only given this chart recently and I’ve been in somewhat of a severe stitching slump.  I need to check if I have this fabric in my stash (my stash and I are currently parted) and then start this soon!

Where can you buy it?Fire Wing Designs is definitely still up and running.  Eva will occasionally chat and display new designs on the PTPlus Yahoogroup. This design can be easily ordered by your LNS or ONS of choice for around $12.00 (US). Alternatively, you can buy the chart and fabric direct from Picture This Plus.

Discussion questions: What’s your impression on the wings?  Do they “work” for you as diaphanous or would you fill them as solid wings?  I have my opinion, I’m interested in other people’s opinions.  Remember, there are no wrong answers as we are all entitled to our preferences :)

Project Status:
