Long Christmas by Annalee Waite Designs

Chart: This Annalee Waite Designs blackwork chart is printed on one long foolscap page. It is a monochromatic design so there is no difficulties with seeing the differences in the symbols.  The chart is printed nice and black and at a good size so it is easy follow.  My only quibble is that there are no blackwork or double stitch instructions given with the chart so stitchers are expected to already know how to do a double-sided running stitch or use a thick enough fabric that a messy back does not matter.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole cross stitch, backstitch and Blackwork.

Materials: DMC metallic threads. Stitched on DMC 14ct “Dark Blue Green” Aida.

Designer’s Notes: A metallic gold ornament hangs at the bottom of a long gold thread. The phrase “Merry Christmas” is spelled out vertically down the gold thread. A sparkling addition to your holiday!

Why I was attracted to this design: This seemed such a different style of Christmas design. Simple but quite elegant. I’ve admired the Annalee Waite “Long” series for a while.

So why haven’t I stitched it? While I have coveted this series for many years, I only actually acquired the charts fairly recently. I love bottle green and teal colours so I probably have an applicable fabric in the stash already.  The thread used is DMC Light Effects #E3821 Light Gold so again I would have a few different metallic threads to choose from already in the stash.  I will most likely stitch this one for Christmas this year.

Where can you buy it? This is an older chart by Annalee Waite Designs but it can be found in some LNS that stock these older designs. You can expect to pay around $8.00 (US) for this design.

Discussion questions: Although the materials listed are Light gold on teal fabric, the cover picture does look very much like the more traditional silver on blue that we associate with Christmas designs.  I’ll be stitching this in green and gold as I love that combo.  What combo would *you* stitch this design in?  Would you stitch this design at all?

17 June 2012: Will find supplies in the stash and stitch this up for Christmas this year.
