Michael the Archangel

Chart: This Dragon Fire Designs chart is printed over four sheets, but there is unfortunately no overlap to help line up the sheets. The symbols are a good size, but the multitude of fractional stitch symbols are small and difficult to see so I would definitely be making a working copy to stitch this design. There is a second, single-page copy of the chart which shows the backstitching for the angel. A final page gives diagrams how to stitch the Plaited Cross Stitch motif featured in the border pattern,

Stitches: Whole cross stitches, fractional stitches, backstitch, Plaited Cross Stitch and Beads

Materials: DMC stranded cottons, Kreinik blending filament and Mill Hill beads. Stitched on Wichelt 28ct “Ivory” Linen.

Designer’s Notes: Michael the Archangel is on his way to save you from the forces of Evil.

Why I was attracted to this design: I love historical, mythological and fantasy designs. The story of the Archangel Michael is quite well-known and has recently been given an update in the Jim Butcher Dresden Files series of books. In a strange way, it is this Michael I think of when I see this piece.

So why haven’t I stitched it? I have a few of the Dragon Fire Designs medieval pieces in my stash.  This piece was nice but it didn’t really call to me any more or less than any of the others.  Looking at it today and seeing the Michael connection now makes me really want to stitch this and read Ghost Story.

Where can you buy it? Dragon Fire Designs seems to be out of business these days. Their website seems broken and I cannot find a distributor for their designs.  I suggest you try your LNS if they stock older charts, or try eBay as I did.

Discussion questions:  Do you ever associate a piece you are stitching with a book series or a TV series or something else in your life?  and I don’t mean that you are stitching The Cheshire Cat and it reminds you of Alice in Wonderland :)
