Saint Johns Folio by Vickery Collection

Chart: This Vickery Collection chart is printed over four Letter/A4 pages with a three-row overlap.  The chart is printed quite small, so I would highly recommend making a working copy. The extensive backstitch is printed in dark purple to make it stand out from the cross stitch symbols underneath. There is a separate sheet of beginner cross stitch instructions.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole cross stitch, fractional stitches, backstitch and French knots.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton. Stitched on Charles Crafts 18ct White Aida.

Designer’s Notes: None.

Why I was attracted to this design: I love medieval calligraphy and illumination. I love Mike Vickery’s work. His extensive use of fractional stitches and backstitching is a real pain to work with but looks fabulous when finished.

So why haven’t I stitched it? This is a relatively recent addition to my stash – I purchased during a Needlework Show in 2010. I stitched a different Mike Vickery design in 2011 and to be honest, I can only face so many quarter stitches and so much backstitching at one time. Maybe its time to start one for 2012.

Where can you buy it? This chart is still in print and can be purchased from your LNS or ONS for $7US. If you want to go through a LOT of old school hassles, and you can send a cheque in US funds, you may be able to eventually manage to buy it directly from Vickery Collection for $9US.

Discussion questions: As discussed with Medieval Mermaid, I feel these pieces lose a lot of their character being stitched in hue-perfect DMC on brilliant white. Given this is such a busy piece I wouldn’t change all the floss, but I would be tempted to change the 762 Pearl Grey and 677 Old Gold which are used mainly as backgrounds. Also tempted to stitch this on a fabric such as Wichelt’s Queen Anne’s Lace.  Thoughts?
