Chart: This Sampler Cove chart is printed over twenty Letter/A4 pages with a three-row overlap on each page. The two major floss symbols are B and H so frankly I think two symbols with a bit more differentiation could have been chosen, but other than that quibble, this is a great chart.  There are three pages of instructions and diagrams for the individual bands and a one page chart showing how the twenty pages all come together.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole Cross stitch, alternating double backstitch, backstitch, double running stitch, long arm cross stitch and blackwork.

Materials: Gloriana silks. Stitched on Lakeside Linen 36ct “Magnolia” linen.

Designer’s Notes: Oh the horror of it all!! This chart wont be for everyone. It may by only for those that appreciate a good shiver of the spine, or goose bumps caused by unexpected thrill.

I have always been a fan of horror films and novels. My favourite author – by a wide margin – is Stephen King. This chart is in honor of those that appreciate the macabre. It has the colours of the grisly – black, and shades of red. Yet, it has a boldness to it that makes it exciting to stitch. I hope you enjoy stitching it as much as I enjoyed designing it.

Why I was attracted to this design: Oh the Goth in me adores this chart! From the colours, to the wording to the dragons in the first band!  Gloriana Rosewood is one of my favourite floss in the world!  I have enough for this chart already! The words send a shiver up the spine “Moonlight casts an eerie glow in shadows terror hides, searching for the haunted souls on wicked wings she rides.”

So why haven’t I stitched it?  When this chart was first released, Claire and I were going to stitch it together as a private Stitch-a-long. Hilary joined in the planning.  I was going to stitch it in the original Gloriana floss because of my love of the Rosewood, but in two strands on 32ct instead of the one strand on 36ct as called for in the chart. Both Claire and Hilary were going to change the thread and fabric but I can’t remember to what, can you two remind me?

Anyway, before we got this SAL underway, both of the other two participants’ health declined rapidly and they stopped stitching for a while. And that’s the current stay of play.  Claire’s health has improved somewhat but now the knitting bug has her.  I’ll still leave this one for now, just in case she gets bitten by the stitching bug at some point in the future. But who knows, maybe some other people might join in that mythical SAL by then :)

Where can you buy it? This design can be easily ordered through your LNS or ONS for $20.00 (US).

Discussion questions: These colours and this design is a lot more vibrant that the cover photo shows. Hmm well I’ve just spent hours in-between blackouts this evening and I can’t find a single image to link to of someone who has actually stitched this design in its original colours.  I can’t even find the Sampler Cove designer Diane Jourdan’s site any more. Anyway here are links to Gloriana Rosewood, Gloriana India ink and Lakeside Linen Magnolia and you’ll have to use your imagination :)

Would you stitch this design in the original colours or would you change them?
