Villa Borghese Dragons by Silver Lining

Chart: This Silver Lining chart is printed over nine Letter/A4 pages. The pages have no overlap rows. There is an extra page that has a small page layout diagram and a small chart of the backstitch placement for the entire chart. This is for a rough guidance only. There are eighteen shades of greys (and white) in this pattern. Fortunately the symbols are easy to differentiate. It is a very busy piece with a great deal of confetti stitching.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole Cross Stitch and backstitch.  This design can be stitched one-over-one or two-over-two.

Materials: Anchor stranded cotton and DMC stranded cotton. Stitched on Wichelt 28ct or 32ct “Queen Anne’s Lace” Jobelan.

Designer’s Notes: This design is dedicated to Hannelore Nunn of Great Britain as a thank you for countless hours of help and support. Thank you Lorchen! When I saw these dragons in Rome last Spring I immediately thought of you.

The design is done as an artist’s view of the sculptures and it is my choice of colours and shapes so it is not to be confused with the exact dragons!

Why I was attracted to this design: Dragons that look like gargoyles. Two of my favourite mythological beasties! Again I bought this many years ago, and I bought the fabric at the same time, but for some reason I hadn’t gotten around to purchasing and sorting the floss required for this one.

So why haven’t I stitched it?  I think it’s the confetti stitching that keeps putting me off. Most of it looks like the designer has mixed the symbols up and scattered them like birdseed across the page. I do love this design, so someday I will gird my loins and start it!

Where can you buy it? This design is still in print and can be easily ordered by your LNS or ONS of choice. Or you can buy direct from The Silver Lining. You should pay around $9.00 (US).

Discussion questions: Does a design that is 18 shades of grey interest you?  Is there another design you like that fits this description?

Project Status:
