Water Dragon by Enchanting Lair

Chart: This Enchanting Lair chart is printed on an 8-page, A3 folded, stapled booklet. The chart is printed quite large, over two pages with the symbols printed quite clear to see and easy to differentiate. Each chart section is printed inside a panel on each page, so there is no concern regarding staples or creases over the symbols.  There is a whole page of diagrams and instructions for stitching the border.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole Cross stitch, Satin stitches and Rhodes stitch.

Materials: DMC stranded cotton, Crescent Colours cottons, Gloriana silks, Dinky Dyes silks, Glisten Gloss blending filament and Rainbow Gallery Petite Braid metallics.  Stitched on Enchanting Lair 28ct “Dragon Skies” linen.

Designer’s Notes: “Throughout our lives we have all heard about the Loch Ness, well where I grew up it was the Ogopogo, and this what I hope it would look like should we ever get a chance to meet.”

Why I was attracted to this design: I know I’m repeating myself, but it’s the simple truth. I love my mythological beasties. I love Enchanting Lair‘s use of colour and texture in these designs. I love how she uses the hand dyed fabrics as an element in the design process rather than ignoring the background as so many other designers do. The artwork is a gestalt of the pattern, the textures and the colours.

So why haven’t I stitched it? I’m still tracking down one elusive thread. Glissen Gloss Blending filament 705.  I bought the chart and fabric and some threads at my then-LNS in Perth a couple of years ago. Since then, I’ve kept an eye out for this thread at closing down sales but Glisson Gloss blending filament doesn’t seem to be a regularly stocked thread. It hasn’t risen high enough in my “must stitch” pile to specifically place an order for this thread and pay multiple times its amount in international postage.

Where can you buy it? This design it is still in print and can be easily ordered in for you by your LNS or ONS of choice. You can also purchase the chart directly from  Enchanting Lair for $9.00 CAD.

Discussion questions: For a project like this, that involves a number of hand dyed threads from a number of manufacturers, do you wait until you have completely kitted it up before you start?  Or do you just start on in and buy the threads you need as you go through the project? I’m interested in how other people approach this issue :)
