Wild Fairy Light by !? Who Knew ?!

Chart: This !? Who Knew ?! chart is printed over four Letter/A4 pages with three overlap rows. The two symbols are large filled circle and a small o; they are easily distinguished.  The chart is printed nice and large with a three row overlap on each successive page so there this is a very easy chart to follow.

Stitches: Pattern uses whole Cross Stitch only.  This design can be stitched one-over-one or two-over-two.

Materials: Gentle Arts Sampler Threads cotton and Kreinik blending filament metallic. Stitched on Picture This Plus 28ct “Fresco”linen.

Designer’s Notes: This fairy is the rarest of the little ones. She is seldom spotted, but if she is, it is usually in the summer light playing among the fuchsias. See if your lucky enough to spot one!

This design is adapted from the Garden Fairy patterns by Alison Tanner and by permission from StenSource International. The image is copyright Alison Tanner. More of her wonderful patterns can be seen at www.stensource.com. Charted for cross-stitch under licence by Picture This Plus.

Why I was attracted to this design: I think I have just about all of the !? Who Knew ?! silhouette designs in my stash.  I love the play of colour of hand dyed thread on hand dyed fabric. This one has a bit extra with the metallic thread in the wings.  Silhouette designs can be a bit of a boring stitch for some but I find them quite restful.

So why haven’t I stitched it?  This is the latest of the !? Who Knew ?! charts to enter my stash, having been picked up in a closing down sale late last year. I have not yet bought any of the materials to kit it up.  The biggest issue with these silhouette designs is that it is really really noticeable if the skeins of floss are not from the same batch.  This design is one of the smallest, and it still needs 5 skeins of Gentle Arts “Claret” which is a quantity that has to be specially ordered in for some LNS or ONS if you want to same dye lot!  The larger designs need nine or twelve skeins!

Where can you buy it? This design is still in print and can be easily ordered by your LNS or ONS of choice. I would recommend buying direct from Picture This Plus (who first distributed !? Who Knew ?! designs), where you can order the chart and fabric at the same time. You should pay around $9.00 (US) for this chart and

Discussion questions: Given the wide range of hand-dyed fabrics and threads available now, would you stitch this “fairy amongst the fuchsias” in these colours, or would you change the threads and fabric colours?
